Why Exercise is Your Best Stressbuster

We live in a fast-paced world, where long work hours, financial pressures, and endless to-do lists have become the norm.

It’s no surprise that 75% of Australians consider themselves stressed. But here’s the good news: there’s a powerful tool to combat stress, and it’s within your reach—exercise.

Research consistently shows that regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. Norwegian researchers found that even a small amount of exercise significantly improves mental health. Similarly, a study by the American College of Sports Medicine revealed that just six weeks of cycling or weight training can alleviate symptoms of anxiety in women.

Why is exercise so effective?

When you exercise, your body clears out stress hormones like cortisol, which build up during stressful periods. At the same time, your body releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that boost your mood and overall sense of well-being.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Exercise also relaxes your muscles, reducing tension and helping you feel more at ease. This physical relaxation often translates into better sleep, which further reduces stress.

Exercise is also an excellent outlet for life’s frustrations. High-energy activities, like boxing or running, can help you channel negative emotions into something positive. For example, I had a senior client who was a partner at a major law firm. Despite being over 60 and under immense pressure, she would come to our sessions, hit the pads with intense focus, and leave feeling much more relaxed.

Finally, regular exercise doesn’t just help you manage stress—it builds resilience. The more you exercise, the better equipped you are to handle stress when it comes your way.

In short, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that movement is medicine. Get active, clear your mind, and build the resilience you need to thrive.
